Setelah bertahun-tahun ‘bersolo karier’ pasca Schizophones bubar/vakum, pada tahun 2010 Deu Galih resmi membentuk sebuah big-band bertalenta untuk mengakomodir arah musik folk yang sedang ia tuju. Band tersebut bernama The Folks, hingga namanya digabung menjadi Deugalih & Folks. Anggota The Folks pun sembarangan orang, karena beberapa dari mereka adalah eksponen scene country-music Bandung. Lalu satu diantaranya adalah dosen di fakultas tempat Deugalih dulu belajar. But when it comes to music, the ‘age barrier’ is totally broke…  Embrio Deugalih & The Folks sendiri sudah terlihat pada tahun 2007, ketika Deu Galih tampil untuk sebuah acara di Fakultas Sastra UNPAD.

Lagu “Earth [free]” merupakan lagu lawas dari Deu Galih yang ditulis pada tahun 1998. Pada tahun 2011, lagu tersebut diaransemen ulang dan direkam ulang, pula dijadikan debut-single dari Deugalih & Folks.

Beberapa nuansa berbeda terdengar di lagu “Earth”; mulai dari atmosfir Irlandia melalui permainan instrumen tin whistle flute dan snare drum di intro maupun outro lagu, sedikit nuansa ragga/psychedelia ala Led Zeppelin melalui gesekan biola, hingga nuansa 90’s US folk-rock/alternative kental ala Crash Test Dummies, Soul Asylum, Blind Melon, Temple of the Dog di bagian permainan gitarnya, hingga menjadikannya A GOOD SONG.

Earth adalah sebuah single-album yang akan menjembatani Deugalih & Folks untuk merilis their highly anticipated debut full-length / LP tahun depan. Jadi untuk sementara, nikmati dulu single “Earth” dari kelompok folk-rocker berbahaya asal Bandung ini! – Dede

After spending years setting his “solo career” into first gear—post-Schizophones—in 2010, Deu Galih officially created another talented ensemble to accommodate his peaking interest in folk music. The band was initially named The Folks, but later on was changed into Deugalih & Folks. The members of The Folks came from quite random backgrounds. Some of them have been investing a life-time interest in Bandung’s country music scene. One is actually a professor in Deugalih’s old faculty. But when it comes to creating music, all barriers are invisible. The band’s potential was clearly shown during an event at the Literature Faculty, UNPAD, Bandung.

The single “Earth [free]” is actually an old song from Deugalih, written in 1998. The song then received a full make-over and rearrangement which later was rerecorded as the debut-single from Deugalih&Folks.

Different nuances can be found in this single: starting from its Irish atmosphere through the tin whistle flute’s dances and snare drum’s sound in the intro and outro; a bit of ragga/psychedelic ala Led Zeppelin through the violin’s vibration; and a flair of  US folk-rock/alternative ala Crash Test Dummies, Soul Asylum, Blind Melon, Temple of the Dog on the guitar bits, creating a fresh light-hearted ambience. A very interesting and sweet composition.

Earth begins the Deugalih&Folks’s journey to their debut LP next year. In the mean time, I hope you will enjoy the single “Earth”.
